Positive Behaviour Support in Ipswich

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) helps people understand behaviours of concern, identify what may be communicating or contributing to them, and develop practical strategies that support safety, wellbeing and quality of life.

At Horizon Counselling & Behaviour Support, we provide person-centred, neuro-affirming positive behaviour support for NDIS participants and their families across Ipswich, Springfield Lakes, Logan, Brisbane and Queensland via telehealth.

Our approach focuses on understanding the person rather than simply trying to change their behaviour. We work collaboratively with participants, families, carers and support teams to develop strategies that are practical, respectful and tailored to everyday life.

Understanding PBS

What Is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support is an evidence-informed approach to understanding and responding to behaviours of concern.

Rather than asking simply, "How do we stop this behaviour?", PBS asks:

"What is this behaviour communicating, and what can we change to better support the person?"

Behaviours can be influenced by many factors, including communication difficulties, sensory experiences, anxiety, changes in routine, environmental demands and unmet needs.

PBS aims to understand these factors and build practical supports that improve quality of life while reducing the need for restrictive or reactive responses.

How Positive Behaviour Support Can Help

Functional Behaviour Assessment

We take time to understand what is happening before recommending strategies. This may involve observation, conversations with the person and their support network, reviewing existing information and identifying patterns around behaviours of concern.

Behaviour Support Plans

Where appropriate, we develop individualised behaviour support plans based on the person's needs, strengths, environment and goals.

Plans may include proactive strategies, skill development, environmental changes and guidance for responding when behaviours occur.

Support & Implementation

A behaviour support plan is only useful when the people around the participant understand how to put it into practice.

We provide practical guidance and training for families, carers, support workers and other people involved in the participant's support.

Ongoing Review

Support needs can change over time. We review progress, consider what is working, and adjust strategies as the person's circumstances, skills and goals develop.

Who Can Benefit From PBS?

Positive Behaviour Support may be suitable for NDIS participants experiencing behaviours that:

  • create safety concerns
  • affect participation in everyday activities
  • impact relationships or family life
  • make school, work or community participation difficult
  • involve aggression or self-injury
  • involve property damage
  • involve wandering or elopement
  • are difficult for families or support teams to understand or respond to

PBS can support people of different ages and with a range of disability and support needs.

A Neuro-Affirming Approach to Behaviour Support

Our approach is grounded in respect, dignity and neuro-affirming practice.

We don't aim to eliminate harmless forms of neurodivergent expression or make someone behave more like a neurotypical person.

Instead, we focus on behaviours that cause genuine harm, distress or significant barriers to quality of life.

This means considering the person's communication, sensory needs, environment and preferences, while looking for ways to increase autonomy, participation and wellbeing.

Positive Behaviour Support in Ipswich & Queensland

Horizon Counselling & Behaviour Support is based in Springfield Lakes and provides positive behaviour support across Ipswich, Logan and Brisbane, with telehealth available throughout Queensland.

We work with self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed NDIS participants.

If you're looking for a positive behaviour support practitioner for yourself or a family member, we'd be happy to have a conversation about your situation.

What Our Clients Say

  • Penny made me realise it's okay not to always have everything figured out straight away, and that flexibility and learning as you go is just part of the role. I've definitely had moments where I've doubted myself or wondered if I was missing something, so hearing that helped ease that a bit.
